Youth advocacy

Youth advocacy

Youth advocacy is when children and young people take steps to use their voices to influence positive change.

Youth advocacy can happen in many different ways: having a say on new policies that affect young people, raising awareness on topics they care about, or participating in their communities on current discussions.

Youth advocacy is important because young people have unique lived experiences and bring insightful perspectives to situations, especially those that impact them. If we are working with and for children and young people, we must collaborate with them as much as we can.

Youth advocacy opportunities

There are many opportunities for youth advocacy in Queensland! Start by exploring community groups that advocate on topics you care about.

We've put together a list of youth advisory, advocacy, and leadership groups to help young people use their voices to influence positive change.

This is not an exhaustive list, there are many advocacy and leadership opportunities available throughout Queensland.

Do you have an opportunity you would like us to list here? Reach out and let us know!

For organisations: How can I help support youth advocacy?

Youth participation is for everyone.  It can range from a small, single opportunity to an embedded model across a whole organisation or system. Every opportunity that is created for young people to express their views and have them genuinely listened to is important. We all have a vital role to play in upholding the rights of young people and acting on what we hear.  When we give back to young people, support them and amplify their views, we influence change and produce more sustainable solutions for everyone.

The Model of participation and the Quick start guide have been designed to help you structure your organisation's model of youth participation.
