When the state assumes parental responsibility for a child, it must do more than provide a placement, it must raise that child, with love, stability, respect, and ambition for their future.
This paper draws from our submissions to three national reviews and centres the voices of young people, carers, and families with lived experience of the care system.
Their key message is undeniable; we must reimagine our role as corporate parents. We must shift from procedural oversight to genuine care. That means:
- supporting carers with realistic financial and emotional backing
- investing in stable, family-based care and reducing reliance on residential placements
- ensuring transitions from care are gradual, supported and lifelong, not cut off at 18
- embedding national standards that reflect what any good parent would do
This is not just about reform, it’s about raising expectations, of ourselves, of the systems we lead, and of the futures we want for Queensland’s children.
