Transition to adulthood

Every year, more than 500 young people in Queensland aged between 15 and 18 years leave the care system. These young people need support from carers, friends, family and community to help them on their journey to becoming independent.

Next Step Plus is a service designed by young people who have already left care, for young people who are about to leave care.

In Queensland, every young person aging out of care (meaning about to leave care, due to their age) can access the Next Step Plus services that include tailored individual support.

If you or someone you know has had a care experience and needs some extra help, visit the Next Steps Plus or call 1800 NEXT STEP (1800 639 878).

“They say you learn how to swim by getting thrown in the deep end… what if you never understood what swimming meant before you started?” (Matt Bambrick)

Learning to be independent can be fun… but it can be really tough too. Matt, Marley and Jason share their experiences below and offer some helpful advice.

Transition to Adluthood Month (T2A Month) is held in November each year with a focus on highlighting the needs of young people as they make the journey from the child protection system to independence.

QFCC would like to thank Matt, Marley and Jason for sharing their experiences and encouraging other young people to reach out for support.
