Local solutions for local communities
The child and family support sector is multi-layered and, at times, very complex.
One of the most effective ways of solving complex social problems is by supporting local communities to identify and lead their own solutions.
The QFCC has been promoting this community-led approach (also known as ‘place-based solutions’) across the sector to help communities become strong and more independent in defining their own priorities and developing their own solutions.
The approach encourages collaboration across different areas (for example non-government, health services, local businesses, council services, local elders, government and community members) and empowers them to draw on their own strengths.
Through 2017-18 QFCC and Queensland Council of Social Service (QCOSS) supported the development of projects in Capricornia and Fraser Coast in response to the priories of those communities in place.
We are continuing to work with the QCOSS to:
- learn from and model community-led approaches across the sector to help communities be strong and more independent in defining their own priorities and developing their own solutions; and,
- build a shared understanding of these place-based approaches within the child and family support sector
Next steps and priorities
We are continuing to support the established place-based projects and have delivered leadership forums in Capricornia and Fraser Coast.
We are in the process of developing a place-based approach and supporting resources and tools, informed by our learning, to support communities to lead their own place-based service response across the child and family support sector.
