Working with First Nations organisations
We are passionate about working together with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations across the child protection and family support sector.
We’re committed to addressing the issue of over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in the child protection system.
Over the past few years, we’ve held consultations, roundtables and met one-on-one with leaders and representatives from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community who support children and families all over Queensland, to hear feedback and talk about how we can improve the sector.
This has shaped the way we do things. It was also a very important step in developing the Strengthening our sector strategy, and our commitment to the Our Way: Generational Strategy 2017-37.
Working together means we can help improve outcomes with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families across the state.
Shaping a sustainable system
We have partnered with the Community Insights team at the Public Service Commission to work with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Controlled Organisations (CCOs) to shape a sustainable child and family support system.
CCO, peak body and government representatives have been clear on opportunities exist, and what challenges are faced by the CCO sector in workforce planning and development.
Stakeholder engagement began in Rockhampton and surrounding communities in 2017 and has continued into Far North Queensland in 2018, with a focus continuing on the Brisbane region and surrounds.
Our discussions, regional visits and workshops with CCOs, government and regulatory agencies, peak bodies and mainstream organisations have provided invaluable insights which are informing the next steps in our work
Changing Tracks Action Plan 2017-19
The Our Way strategy spoke of both the need to re-balance investment towards early intervention and prevention.
The strategy emphasised the importance of increasing investment into community-led organisations and CCOs, which are best placed to determine, design and deliver services that will meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, families and communities.
This intent was incorporated into the Changing Tracks Action Plan 2017-19 under action 6.6.
We have partnered with the Queensland Aboriginal and Islander Health Council (QAIHC) and the Queensland Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Protection Peak (QATSICPP) to analyse current investment in building sector capacity and workforce capability. A methodology and project approach has been endorsed by all partners.
Outcomes of this analysis will be valuable in informing future investment policy platforms; especially in relation to community-led organisations and CCOs. It may also be used to generate insight into the opportunities, and challenges, for those services to have a greater role in supporting the safety and wellbeing of children.
We have partnered with creative agency Gilimbaa to produce a Career Promotion Campaign to attract Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to work in the child and family support sector.
The campaign showcases the positive and rewarding career paths available in the sector, and the unique cultural knowledge and skills which Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people bring to the workforce.
