This report is based on an online survey of Australian parents conducted in early 2018. The research found that more than one in five children live in a food insecure household. The cost of living is the main cause of household food insecurity. More than half of the parents in food insecure households expect even greater challenges in the future. Parents notice a number of negative changes to their children’s wellbeing as a result of food insecurity. Parents report skipping meals so their children can eat and tend to rely on family and friends to ensure their children have food. The research also showed that food assistance provides significant benefits for families and children experiencing food insecurity.
