Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Learning Forum, Cairns.

8 June 2017

Cairns frontline practitioners working directly with children and young people took time out to attend Queensland Family and Child Commission’s (QFCC) Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) learning forum on the 9th of May.

Special guest speakers included Paediatrician Dr Doug Shelton and Psychologist Kim LeGros from Queensland Health, Anne Russell CEO and Founder of Russell Family Fetal Alcohol Disorder Association, Prue Walker FASD Consultant & Child Protection Practice Leader, Fiona Millard Apunipima Health Council and Magistrate Pearson Magistrates Court of Queensland.

The forum is an action that contributes towards QFCC’s implementation of QFCC Strengthening Our Sector Strategy’s First Action Plan 2016 -2019  and came about as a result of consultations that informed a part of QFCC’s information paper on The Age of Criminal Responsibility.

The learning forum, provided an opportunity for information sharing, networking and in depth discussion about FASD. Three of the key themes from the forum include:

  • FASD is prevalent across all areas of society and is often misdiagnosed
  • FASD is preventable and therefore it is important to increase community awareness
  • It is important that mandatory training is available for all professionals working in the human services area so they have fundamental knowledge of the common features of FASD relevant to their area of practice.
