Meeting of the Children's Commissioners

In November 2018, the Australian and New Zealand Children’s Commissioners and Guardians (ANZCCG) met to discuss how jurisdictions are taking action to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge and lived experience inform and shape decisions.

Commissioner Phillip Brooks spoke about Queensland’s journey towards Indigenous self-determination, citing significant decisions made by the Queensland Government including the legislative requirement that the QFCC has a Commissioner of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander decent and that both the Principal Commissioner and Commissioner have a role in ensuring the wellbeing and best interest of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children.

A number of other decisions were also made at the meeting including embedding all five elements of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Child Placement Principle in legislation.

These significant changes will enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples to have greater leadership at all levels of decision making.
