What to do: Concerned about suicide and someone you know?

This fact sheet from Kids Helpline provides advice on responding to a child who tells you they are suicidal. It suggests starting by talking to the child and allowing them to share as much, or as little, as want. Acknowledging their feelings, without telling them what to do is also important, and reassuring them that you care and that help is available. Kids Helpline suggests that it is  important to ask about suicidal thoughts and their immediate safety. It also provides advice on how to respond if the child has a specific suicide plan and/or might be at risk of hurting themselves. Importantly, family and friends are encouraged to seek professional advice and a range of contacts are provided.
