Unsafe in the city: Sydney

This report from Plan International presents the findings of a crowd-mapping that enabled young women to identify and share the location of public spaces that make them feel uneasy and scared or happy and safe in Sydney.  The locations chosen by the young women included 25% which they associated with good experiences. In contrast, 75% of places were associated with bad experiences. Over two-thirds of the reported incidents included sexual harassment while 14% were recorded sexual assaults. Of those who have experienced street harassment, more than a third were first harassed between the ages of 11 and 15. Ninety percent of young women in Sydney did not feel safe after dark. Nearly half of those reporting bad incidents now avoid that area if they are alone and 12% have never gone back to that location.
