Understanding our excuses: The excuse interpreter

This brief paper provides information for parents, family members, teachers, coaches, employers, Elders and role models about how they can have a positive influence on children and young people to demonstrate the importance of respecting women and girls to help prevent violence against women. It includes examples of excuses that are used for boys’ disrespectful behaviour, such as “It’s ok. He’ll grow out of it”. It also explains the tendency to blame girls when boys are aggressive or disrespectful to them and discusses common gender stereotypes which inadvertently support violence against women.
