Timing and chronicity of child neglect and substance use in early adulthood

This research examined the relationship between the timing and chronicity of neglect during childhood and substance use in early adulthood. Three groups were identified: Chronic Neglect, Late Neglect and Limited Neglect. Late Neglect, which involved young people whose neglect began in mid- adolescence were especially vulnerable to later substance use. The authors concluded that those working with these young people and their families can play a valuable role by helping to ensure their basic needs are adequately met, and recognising early signs of substance use and abuse.
