Student reports of peer threats of violence: Prevalence and outcomes

This article discusses research on high school students experience of violence and provides guidance for those working with, or caring for, students and young people on providing them with appropriate support. As threats are under-reported it is important to engage in proactive conversations with young people to ascertain whether they feel safe or are concerned about anyone. If a young person does report, this should be taken seriously as they are more likely to report if they think it is serious. If you act on their concerns they are more likely to report in the future. If the young person reports a specific threat it should be taken very seriously as these are ten times more likely to be carried out. Action should be taken to protect the young person from possible victimisation.
