Professionalism, paperwork and pedagogy: Identifying leadership strategies that enable professional practice in long day care

Centre directors play a critical role in establishing a supportive workplace and positive organisational culture. In this study centre directors implemented positive leadership strategies and managed time and resources which created workplace conditions that enabled a collective vision for professional practice. Five key areas in director capability were identified: setting high, yet achievable expectations; approachability and accessibility; workload management; support for professional growth; and respect for people and their work. The study demonstrated that centre directors can foster a supportive and positive culture amongst their staff and students.
