This report presents the results of Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) 2016, which is an international comparative study of student achievement. Australia has participated in the two most recent studies, PIRLS 2011 and 2016. The PIRLS collects both background and educational data from students, schools and teachers. This information is analysed and interpreted to provide relevant policy advice on how to improve teaching and learning to help young students to become accomplished readers and also assists countries to monitor and evaluate their teaching of reading over time. The report also provides comparisons with other countries to demonstrate Australia's achievement in reading literacy.
