Long-term effects of youth unemployment on mental health: Does an economic crisis make a difference?

This Swedish population-cohort study investigated the consequences of youth unemployment for young people's mental health and if this may vary depending on the national rate of unemployment. The analyses found that youth unemployment was related to mental health problems. Furthermore, this relationship was independent of the overall national rate of unemployment, so even if national unemployment rates are low, young unemployed people are at increased risk of mental health problems.
