Levels of brain chemicals may reflect severity of autism traits

This paper discusses research investigating differences in brain chemicals in autistic and control subjects. The research found that in both white and gray brain matter, the more a person’s levels of particular chemicals differed from those of controls, the more severe that person’s autism traits. Furthermore, the greater the reduction in these chemicals in the white matter, the lower a person's IQ. There were gender differences however, with the levels of the chemicals in autistic women similar to those seen in neurotypical men.
