Do chatbots have a role to play in suicide prevention?

This article discusses Australia’s first suicide prevention chatbot for the family and friends of those in crisis to help them quickly and easily start a conversation about suicide. In Australia, the suicide rate among young people has increased at an alarming rate over the past ten years; with an increase of 34% for young men, and 76% in young women. The authors' research identified that young people want chatbots that can identify when a conversation about suicide is underway, help to reach out to a friend and offer assistance to help people talk about their own experiences with suicide. The authors also discuss the limitations of chatbots.
