Further insight needed into potential development delays in preterm children

This research examined if preterm children were at higher risk of developing executive functioning deficits than their full-term peers at kindergarten. This research found that the executive functioning deficits found in preterm infants do continue to at least school entry when they are 4-5 years old. Preterm children were significantly behind in regards to executive functions, leading to deficits in their capacity to engage in adaptive, goal-directed behaviours which can impact on their engagement in learning and can lead to the development of behavioural problems and decreased academic achievement.
